about

Martin and Alex failed to meet at the legendary Barry Jazz Summer School in 1979, although they were both there! An incredible cast of tutors – from Tony Oxley to Stan Sulzmann to Keith Tippett, Gordon Beck, Allan Holdsworth, Alan Skidmore, John Taylor and many others – meant that dull moments were banished and the devil made fine work for idle hands.
Fast forward nearly forty years, after myriad individual journeys, their branchlines met at a common junction.
Getting more personal, we had both pursued our own paths with an uncommon rigour, and a chance meeting at London’s iconic 606 Club led to a period of intense work together. Rehearsal isn’t the right word for this – it was a synthesis of spirits, respectful of each other’s language, yet feeling a rare confidence in putting forward each of our own musical personalities in the knowledge that the other could join in the stream and yet also make their own voice heard.
It took a while! A couple of years of solid work, focused solely on the music. No hats, no badges, no pretensions – sitting in a room, week after week trying to make sense and unity from where we had both come from.
And it led to this – a meeting of spirits in an increasingly disparate musical world; something which can inspire unity, beyond language, beyond our small selves, beyond fashion, beyond a style.
